SECURUS/Hardware/Leak sensor

Leak sensors with wireless water alarm

A leak sensor detects water on the floor and reports it to SECURUS by radio. Different designs suit different locations: a probe for one specific point, a sensing cable for a whole run, a membrane for surfaces or a mini sensor that is simply placed on the floor.

Spot sensor, sensing cable or membrane: which leak sensor fits?

A spot sensor with a probe, such as the Milesight EM300-SLD or the Dragino LWL02, detects water exactly where it lies. It suits clearly defined risk points such as the floor in front of a boiler, a storage tank or a pump.

A zone sensor works with a sensing cable that reports water along its whole length. The EM300-ZLD has a 3 m cable, and the cable of the Dragino WL03A-LB can be extended. The cable is laid along pipes, gutters or under the raised floor of a server room and so monitors a run instead of a point.

For surfaces there is a flat detection film, the EM300-MLD, for example under washing machines or air conditioners. The WS303 mini leak sensor is simply placed on the floor and fits under sinks or into narrow gaps.

Where leak sensors are used

  • Boiler and plant rooms: on the floor in front of boilers, storage tanks, pumps and expansion vessels.
  • Service entry room and basement: at the water meter, filter, pressure reducer and floor drain.
  • Server rooms: under air conditioners with condensate drains and along pipes in the raised floor.
  • Laundries, kitchens and washrooms: next to washing machines and dishwashers and under sinks.
  • Retail and catering: under refrigerated counters, cooling units and beverage systems.

Installation at the lowest point

Water collects at the lowest point of its path. That is where the sensor belongs: on the floor in front of the possible source, in a dip or next to a floor drain, not on the wall at hip height. With the EM300-SLD only the probe lies on the floor, on a 1.5 m cable, while the device itself stays dry on the wall.

All leak sensors transmit via LoRaWAN to a gateway in the building and need neither power nor data cables. Installation usually takes only a few minutes and is possible while the building is in use.

Battery life and protection rating

Battery life and enclosure protection vary by model and configuration. Manufacturer figures apply under specified measurement and reporting conditions. Temperature, radio reception and the frequency of water alerts also affect planning. Check the selected device’s specifications and plan regular functional checks.

If a sensor goes offline, for example because its battery is flat, SECURUS reports that too. So no measuring point falls silent unnoticed.

From leak sensor to water alarm

When a sensor detects water, SECURUS reports it as a critical event to the responsible notification group, by SMS, email and in the dashboard, with building, room and measuring point. How risk points are chosen and alarm routes are planned is described in the leak detection use case.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about leak sensors

How long does the battery of a leak sensor last?

Several years are possible, depending on the model and configuration. Refer to the conditions in the relevant datasheet and account for reporting intervals, temperature and radio reception at the installation site.

Which leak sensor suits a basement floor?

For one point in front of a boiler or pump, a sensor with a probe; for longer runs along pipes, a sensing cable. The Dragino LWL04 is a waterproof alarm for floors in plant rooms, basements and wet areas.

Does a leak sensor also detect liquids other than water?

The sensors respond to conductive liquids. According to the manufacturer, the membrane of the EM300-MLD also detects weak acids and alkalis.

Do LoRaWAN leak sensors need a gateway?

Yes. The sensors transmit to a gateway in the building, which forwards the data to the SECURUS Cloud via Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular network. Which gateway fits depends on the building and the installation location.

Which device is right for you?

We select the right device with you, integrate it into SECURUS and deliver it ready for use.
