SECURUS/Use Cases/Green spaces and soil moisture

Measuring soil moisture for street trees and green spaces

Urban trees and green spaces need different amounts of water depending on their location. Soil sensors show conditions around the roots. SECURUS displays moisture and temperature histories and reports your thresholds so grounds teams can plan watering around actual needs.

How it works

From the reading to the right person.

01

Measure

Sensors record readings or events directly on site.

02

Transmit

Via LoRaWAN to a gateway within range, then through its internet connection to the platform.

03

Check

The platform checks every value against your thresholds, rules and time windows.

Measuring correctly

Young street trees, flower beds and lawns differ in soil, planting and water needs. The soil moisture sensor is buried at the right depth; one measuring point represents one location, not the whole green space. The sensors transmit via LoRaWAN, so no Wi-Fi is needed at the tree.

Thresholds from practice

There is no universal percentage. It is best to compare the trends with known situations: after rain, after watering and during dry spells. From this, you set your thresholds. For towns and municipalities, it pays to start with locations that need particularly intensive care.

Review irrigation and prepare watering rounds

After watering, the readings show whether moisture at the probe has increased and how quickly it falls again. If there is no change, check water delivery, soil conditions and probe placement. Cistern level monitoring adds information about available water. The team uses the measurements and the condition of the plants to plan the next round.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about soil moisture measurement

At what depth is it measured?

In the root zone, depending on the planting and soil. We agree the depth with your green space team.

Is one sensor enough for several trees?

Only for very similar locations. Different soil or water inflow needs separate measuring points.

Does SECURUS control irrigation?

No. SECURUS shows the need and alerts you; automatic irrigation would have to be planned separately.

Do soil sensors work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. Sensors transmit through LoRaWAN to an accessible gateway. Reception is checked at the planned location.
