SECURUS/Use Cases/Fall detection

Camera-free fall detection for care homes

Camera-free fall detection can provide care teams with additional information between rounds. Radar sensors detect potential fall events within a defined area, such as a resident’s room or bathroom. SECURUS forwards alerts to the responsible group. Locations and response procedures are agreed with your facility.

How it works

From the reading to the right person.

01

Measure

Sensors record readings or events directly on site.

02

Transmit

Via LoRaWAN to a gateway within range, then through its internet connection to the platform.

03

Check

The platform checks every value against your thresholds, rules and time windows.

How detection works

The radar sensor is mounted on the ceiling and covers a defined area, such as a bathroom or part of a room. If it detects a fall or unusually long inactivity, an alert goes to the responsible group. No images are recorded.

How reliably this works in each case depends on the room, furniture and mounting. So start with a few rooms and check detection and alert routes in everyday use.

What to clarify beforehand

Who receives the alert on which shift, and what happens next? Fall detection replaces neither care nor a required nurse call system. Even without a camera, events are assigned to a room, so involve data protection, care management and residents early. An SOS button complements detection for deliberate calls for help.

Test detection and response in a pilot

Work with care managers and technical staff to check which areas the sensor actually covers. Test the intended alerts and the handover between day and night shifts. Record who checks the room and how false alerts are reported. The pilot establishes whether installation and response procedures suit daily care routines.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about camera-free fall detection

Is every fall detected?

Not guaranteed. The room, furniture and mounting affect detection, which is why you test the installation in your rooms first.

Do residents have to wear anything?

No. The sensor is on the ceiling, so no wristband or pendant is needed.

Does the solution replace a nurse call system?

No. It is an additional source of information; required nurse call and emergency systems remain in place.

Does detection work at night?

Radar does not need visible light. Suitability of the room and installation must be checked on site.
